조동사 should, would 유형

조동사는 동사 앞에 위치하여, 그 동사의 의미를 조절하는 역할을 한다. should, would의 역할은 다음과 같이 표현된다.

VI. should

a. ‘A 해야 한다’라는 의미로 표현된다. must 보다는 의무에 대해 약한 뉘앙스로 나타난다.

 

People should check their baggage first.

사람들은 먼저 수화물을 확인해야 한다.

Everyone should contribute ideas for the project.

모든 이는 프로젝트를 위해 아이디어를 생각해야 한다.

Passengers should check the updated departure schedule.

승객들이 업데이트된 출발 일정을 확인해야 한다.

Employees should utilize the new software for increased efficiency.

직원들이 효율성을 높이기 위해 새 소프트웨어를 활용해야 한다.

Team members should communicate effectively to ensure the success of the project.

b. 주절에 insist, propose, recommend, suggest 등이 오면, that 절에 should 가 쓰이며, 생략될 수 있다.

 

He suggests that you should try the new restaurant in town.

그는 새로운 동네 레스토랑을 한 번 가보는 게 좋다고 제안한다.

​She insisted that he should attend the meeting to represent the team.

그녀는 팀을 대표하여 회의에 참석해야 한다고 주장했다.

[적용] 위의 문장에서 should가 생략되면, he attend로 표현된다. 이때, 주절에 insisted가 있어서, 종속접속사 that이 이끄는 종속절에서 should가 생략된 것이므로, he attend은 맞는 표현이다.

After careful consideration, Jason proposed that we should implement the new strategy to boost productivity.

신중한 고려 끝에, 제이슨은 생산성을 높이기 위해 우리가 새로운 전략을 시행해야 한다고 제안했다.

c. should have p.p. ‘A 했어야 했다’라는 의미로 표현된다.

Jason should have taken the subway.

제이슨이 지하철을 탔어야 했다.

He should have phoned Ed this morning.

그는 오늘 아침에 에드에게 전화했어야 했다.

We should have had a proper discussion before voting.

a. ‘A 하곤 했다’라는 의미를 나타내며, 과거의 불규칙한 습관을 표현한다.

 

He would often retire to his den.

그는 자주 자신의 서재에 틀어박히곤 했다.

He would often share his thoughts on the matter during our team meetings.

그는 우리의 팀 미팅에서 종종 그 문제에 대한 생각을 나누곤 했다.

He would regularly emphasize the importance of teamwork in achieving our goals.

그는 정기적으로 목표를 성취하는 데 있어 팀워크의 중요성을 강조하곤 했다.

The company would regularly organize team lunches to foster a sense of camaraderie among employees.

He would not commit himself in the matter.
