조동사 need, ought to, used to 유형

조동사는 동사 앞에 위치하여, 그 동사의 의미를 조절하는 역할을 한다. need,  ought to, used to 역할은 다음과 같이 나타난다.

VIII. ought to

a. ‘A 해야 한다’라는 의미를 나타내며, 의무를 나타낸다.

 

He ought not to skip breakfast.

그는 아침을 거르지 않아야 한다.

You ought to see the beautiful view.

그 멋진 경치를 너도 꼭 봐야 한다.

Jason ought to get out of the house more.

제이슨은 집에서 외출을 더욱 많이 해야 한다.

We ought to stock up on film before our trip.

우리는 여행을 가기 전에 필름을 많이 구입해야 한다.

He ought to share the workload with his colleagues to complete the project on time.

프로젝트를 제시간에 완료하기 위해 동료들과 작업 부담을 나누어야 한다.

 

b. ought to 의 부정은 ought not to이다.

 

You ought not to tell a lie.

거짓말을 해서는 안 된다.

We ought not to have any prejudice against them.

우리는 그들에 대한 어떠한 편견도 가지지 말아야 한다.

​IX. need & dare

A. need

a. 긍정문에서는 본동사로 표현된다.

 

We need to address the issues raised in the meeting.

우리는 회의에서 제기된 문제들을 해결해야 한다.

The car needs a thorough inspection before the road trip.

차는 로드 트립 전에 철저한 점검이 필요하다.

He needs to improve his communication skills for the presentation.

그는 발표를 위해 의사소통 기술을 개선해야 한다.

The computer system needs an upgrade to support the latest software.

컴퓨터 시스템은 최신 소프트웨어를 지원하기 위해 업그레이드가 필요하다.

The team needs to collaborate more effectively to meet the project deadline.

팀은 프로젝트 마감일을 충족하기 위해 더 효과적으로 협력해야 한다.

 

b. need의 부정은 need not이며, ‘A 하지 않아도 된다’ 라는 의미를 나타낸다. ​부정문에서는 조동사로 표현된다.

 

He need not come to the meeting if he's busy.

그는 바빠서 회의에 오지 않아도 된다.

​Good food need not cost a fortune.

좋은 식품이라고 꼭 많은 돈이 드는 것은 아니다.

He needs not enlarge upon this point.

이 점에 대해서는 상세히 설명할 필요가 없다.

We need not change the meeting place.

우리는 만나는 장소를 바꿀 필요가 없다.

Business letters need not be formal and impersonal.

사업상의 편지라고 해서 형식적이고 인간미 없게 쓸 필요는 없다.

 

B. dare

a. 긍정문에서는 본동사로 표현된다. ‘과감히 A 하다’라는 의미를 나타낸다.

 

He dares to try new things, even if he seems challenging at first.

그는 처음에는 어렵게 느껴지더라도 새로운 것을 시도해 보는 용기를 갖고 있다.

He dared to challenge the traditional norms and pursue his own path.

그는 전통적인 규범에 도전하고 자신만의 길을 찾아 나갔다.

They dared to explore uncharted territories, discovering new opportunities for growth.

그들은 미지의 영역을 탐험하기를 감히 했고, 성장의 새로운 기회를 발견했다.

They dared to organize a charity event, aiming to make a positive impact on the community.

그들은 사회에 긍정적인 영향을 미치기 위해 자선 행사를 기획하는 도전을 했다.

They dared to challenge conventional wisdom, proposing innovative solutions to old problems.

그들은 관습적인 지혜에 도전했고, 오래된 문제에 혁신적인 해결책을 제안했다.

 

​b. dare의 부정은 dare not이며, 부정문에서는 조동사로 표현된다.

 

He dared not disclose the surprise party plans.

그는 서프라이즈 파티 계획을 공개하지 않기로 했다.

She dared not approach the wild animal, aware of the potential danger.

그녀는 잠재적인 위험을 알면서, 야생 동물에 가까이 다가가지 않았다.

He dared not challenge the established norms, conforming to societal expectations.

그는 사회적 기대에 따라 정립된 규범에 도전하지 않기로 했다.

X. used to

​a. 과거의 규칙적인 습관을 나타내며, ‘A 하곤 했다’로 표현한다.

 

We used to go hiking every weekend.

우리는 주말마다 하이킹을 가곤 했다.

I used to go to the cinema every week.

예전에는 내가 매주 영화를 보러 갔었다.

He used to visit me the middle of the week.

그는 수요일에 나를 방문하곤 했다.

We used to go sailing on the lake in summer.

우리는 여름이면 호수로 배를 타러 가곤 했다.

He used to bake cookies for his family every Christmas.

그는 매년 크리스마스마다 가족을 위해 과자를 굽곤 했다.

 

b. 과거의 계속적인 상태를 나타내며, ‘한 때 A 했었다’로 표현한다.

 

She used to edit a women’s magazine.

그녀는 과거 한때 여성 잡지의 편집장이었다.

People used to think the earth was flat.

옛날에는 사람들이 지구가 평평하다고 생각했다.

He used to run when she was at college.

그는 대학 때 달리기를 했었다.

He used to be a pilot but now he has a desk job.

그가 한때는 조종사였지만 지금은 사무직에 있다.

He used to live in Paris and He’s still fond of the place.

그는 과거 한때 파리에서 살았는데 아직도 그곳을 좋아한다.

 

동사 앞에 위치하여 조동사의 역할을 하는 need, ought to, used to는 문맥에 따라 필요, 습관 등을 나타내며 적절하게 표현된다.
